Snow fell in many parts of the Alps this week. Staff in 2 of our resorts report:-

San Cassiano, Alta Badia, Dolomiti Superski, Italy

Snow has fallen right down to the valley & there is a good 10cm outside the door of Albergo Frohsinn! Whilst it is too early to tell if it will stay, reports of 40cm on the slopes at the top of the Piz Sorega gondola have got us really excited & eager for the lifts to open at the end of this month!

Tignes Les Boisses, L’ Espace Killy, France

Over 30cm of fresh snow has fallen on the glacier & more is forecast this weekend. Les Boisses also has snow cover & our terrace needs clearing already! The nearest lifts to Chalet Hotel Les Melezes aren’t due to open for a few weeks but there is plenty of skiing on the Grande Motte glacier & we are keeping busy with SKi & Board Camp- we hope to post some photos soon, if only our staff will come down from enjoying the fresh snow!

Ski & Board Camp 2009 started 26/09/09 at Les Melezes, Tignes Les Boisses, with a special opening Gala weekend.
Guardian Travel writer Rupert Mellor was among our guests & today’s issue of the Sunday Observer (Travel section) includes a full page article by him describing his “first snowboarding trip of the season, a bargain long weekend in Tignes”.

Of Les Melezes, Rupert writes:-
“Les Mélèzes is a simple, spotlessly clean 20-room chalet hotel with the usual alpine extras like hot tub, sun terrace and sauna plus a Wii, Wi-Fi and Sky TV. Served in a dining room whose large windows reveal spectacular views of the valley, Roger’s food is, for the price, frankly astounding. Dinners include whole poussin with orange zest gravy, herb-crusted rack of lamb with dauphinoise gratin and roasted veg, and seared fillet of pork with wholegrain mustard and mushroom sauce. And the throng who fill the bar, many pre-bonded by previous trips with MountainSun (its repeat rate for guests averages about 60%) variously enjoy relaxed and borderline riotous evenings, side by side. The prices help – here a pint of beer will cost you €4.50 against the valley average of €6. This trip’s only reminders of in-season fiscal realities are at the Panoramic mountain restaurant, the only one open at this time of year, where coffee costs €3.60.

To see the full article visit … http://www.guardian.co.uk/travel/2009/oct/04/skiing-snowboarding

We can’t wait for the winter season to begin so we can get out on the slopes again! Our staff are counting the days till the first lifts……

Espace Killy-

Grand Motte Glacier - opens 26th September 09 (that’s only 32 days away!)

Val Claret, Tignes Le Lac & parts of Val d’Isere will open during Oct /Nov when snow falls

Tignes Les Boisses / Les Brevieres & all sectors of Espace Killly will open by 12th Dec 09

Dolomiti Superski

The Piz Sorega lift in San Cassiano, Alta Badia is due to open on 28th Nov 09. This date also applies to the Sella Ronda. A magical time for skiing on empty pistes as the resort awakens, &, in our experience over the years, some of the seasons’ best fresh snow.

Paradiski

Lifts are due to start operating from the 13th Dec 09

If you can’t wait either, we have availability at all the above resorts! Why not sneak off on a short ski break? Amazingly cheap Autumn flights can be found.

Visiting Venice on your way home from Albergo Frohsinn, San Cassiano can be a superb end to your ski holiday. Following the cancellation of Easyjet’s Bristol flights on Saturdays, we decided to spend a night in Venice & fly home on Sunday. After searching the internet, we found a very reasonable hotel in Cannaregio on Venice’s main island, “Ai Due Leoni” is located in a quiet residential area just 10 mins walk from St Lucia station. Our room was clean & spacious with private bathroom & the staff (& resident cat) were really friendly. The restaurant on the nearest corner “Tre Archi” was recommended by the hotel & had superb food at low rates for Venice.

Getting to & from Marco Polo airport into central Venice could not be simpler. A direct bus takes just 25 mins & costs 5.5 Euro return. The bus drops you in Piazzle Roma, from where you can catch water busses or simply stroll through the maze of Venetian streets & squares known as “Campo” (translated meaning gardens).

It’s easy to get a little lost, but you are never far from a sign directing you to San Marco, Rialto or Ferrovia (railway station).

We discovered superb prices on Venetian glass & jewellery in the street near the station “Lista di Spagna”, as well as what must be the cheapest cafe /restaurant on Venice island- “Brek”. We just wished we’d found this earlier, as eating & drinking in Venice can be expensive (check the cover charge & drinks prices before you choose where to eat if you have a budget!).

Piazza San Marco is where most tourists head for, & the basillica is an awesome sight, but it will take at least 45 mins to reach it from Piazzale Roma.

One big tip - wear plenty of warm clothing, Venice can be really cold in winter! We’d come from temperatures of minus 12 in the mountains but even that didn’t prepare us for the biting wind - fortuneately we still had our long johns & hadn’t packed them in the suitcase we left at the Airport’s luggage deposit!
